四字词语 - Four Character Words

In Chinese, one likes to use 四字词语， a four character "word" which can deliver thousand words. Using this four character words not only makes a sentence more concise but also gives the sentence a much deeper meaning and an image of a learned person. Widely used in daily interactions. A useful tip for living in China especially at formal communication level is to get familiar with them, something as expats in China can't escape. Each four character word has its own story of origin which is really fascinating. I'll put that in the future :)

Now some of the more common used four character words which I learnt in my class with a sampe on how to use it in a sentence. For a better translation check a dictionary since sometimes there are many more other meanings of the word.

知之甚少 (know little about) 我对电脑知之甚少, 出一点儿毛病就要麻烦别人。
拍案而起 pāi àn ér qǐ (very angry) 报纸上的这条新闻让他们拍案而起。
实事求是 shí shì qiú shì (seek truth from facts) 我们必须从自己的情况出发,实事求是地按照自己的能力来。。。。。。
相依为命 (stick together and help each other in difficulties) 这些年来,我们俩相依为命,从来没有分开过。
追悔莫及　zhuī huǐ mò jí (too late to regret) 我当时因为工资太低放了加公司,现在真是追悔莫及。

没大没小 (impolite; informal, regards others as the same regardless age, ranks, etc) 　这孩子老是没大没小。
依依不舍 yī yī bù shě (be reluctant to)　他依依不舍地看了一眼送他的朋友们，转身上了飞机。
一举一动 yī jǔ yī dòng (any move/action) 开始时该注意他的一举一动。
筋疲力尽 jīn pí lì jìn （be exhausted）　．．．到下班时已经筋疲力尽，哪还有力气做饭阿。
粗心大意 cū xīn dà yì （careless）平时总是粗心大意的，手机到处方，不丢才怪。

莫名其妙 mò míng qí miào (be rather baffled) 他最近总是莫名其妙得发脾气。
无心之失 (make a mistake, a fault committed un-intentionally)　我为我的无心之失向你道歉。
直截了当 zhí jié liǎo dàng (be straightforward)　他站了起来，直截了当地表达了对老张的不满。
听命于人 现在我终于可以自己做，不需要再听命于人了。
大名鼎鼎 famous

默默无闻mò (dark, quiet) mò wú wén (unknown to public)他以前一直默默无闻，　没想到一下成了冠军。
冥思苦想 míng sī kǔ xiǎng (think hard) 一进门，就看见父亲对着一盘冥思苦想。
费尽心机 fèi jìn xīn jī (rack one’s brain)　为了战对手，他们真是费尽心机，　可是最终有得到了什么呢？
不知所措 bù zhī suǒ cuò (be at loss, don't know what to say)　我没想到会在这人碰到你，一下子有点儿不知所措。
实话实说 shí huà shí shuō (speak the plain truth)

鬼使神差 guǐ shǐ shén chāi (a miraculous coincidence) 我竟然鬼使神差地跑到了我们第一次见面的地方。
有生以来 yǒu shēng yǐ lái (since birth) 这是我有生以来第一次在这多人面前说话。
如愿以偿: rú yuàn yǐ cháng achieve what one wishes他终于如愿以偿地见到了自己的偶像.
不得而知 (unable to find out) 毕业以后他去了哪儿，我们不得而知。
得天独厚 dé tiān dú hòu （richly given by nature) 这个地方的地理环境得天独厚。

家喻户晓 jiā yù hù xiǎo （so well known that everybody knows) 这个故事在我们这儿家喻户晓。
炉火纯青lú huǒ chún qīng (perfection) 他已经把汉语运用得炉火纯青。
雅俗共赏yǎ sú gòng shǎng （appeal to all) 他的作品是雅俗共赏的。
