List of most commonly used words. To get familiarize with these words when is a good tip for living in China.

Bean sprout 豆芽 dòu yá

Chinese

cabbage 白菜 bái cài

Congee/porridge 粥 zhōu

Cooking oil 油 yóu. There are many different

types. Canola oil 芥花籽油 jiè huā zǐ yóu

Day care/kindergaten 幼儿园 yòu ér yuán

Flour 面粉 miàn fěn. High gluten flour: 高筋粉gāo jīn fěn good for making bread. 低筋粉 is good to make cake. But, sometimes I used all purpose flour since I can't find the low-gluten flour easily. 全麦 (quán mài )粉 is whole wheat flour

furu 腐乳

Green onion 大葱 dà cōng : probably in the USA is known as leek, it's a big green onion.

Luo bo 白萝卜 (white one) or carrot 红萝卜hóng luó bo

Meatballs 丸子 wánzi

Mushroom: 蘑菇mó gu . There are variuos types:

Oyster mushroom 姬菇 jīgū

Oyster sauce 蚝油 háo yóu

Pepper 胡椒 hú jiāo

花椒 Si Chuan Pepper very famously used in Si Chuan food

Pressure cooker 高压锅

Orang or tangerine: The big one is called

橙子 chéng zi , the small one is

桔子 jú zi

Sharpen knife: 磨刀 (mó dāo). Check Recipe site for how to sharpen knife.

Sour vegetable: China has lots of types. For example this: 酸菜 suān cài

Soy sauce 酱油 jiàng yóu

Stainless steel 不锈钢 bù xiù gāng

Star anise 八角

Steamed buns with no filling 馒头 mán tou :

Steamed buns 包子 bāo zi : steamed buns with filling (meat, veggie, etc)

Steam 蒸 zhēng

Simmer/stew 炖 dùn

Thousand-year-egg, black looking egg 松花蛋 sōng huā dàn

Hawthorne fruit 山楂 shān zhā

Stir fry 炒 chǎo

Deep fry cooking 炸 zhá

Boil 煮 zhǔ

Cut into fine strips 切成丝
Cut into cubes 切成块

Slice 切成圆片

Ground 绞碎

Vinegar 醋 cù

xiao mi 小米 xiǎo mǐ, a type of grain.

Yeast 酵母 jiào mǔ. I usually use this brand.

For simple white bread, rule of thumb: 2 cups of flour with 1/4 tsp of this yeast.

CAR & TOOLS

Drill 电钻

Car maintenance: tell the person 保养 (bǎo yǎng). To change oil: 换机油 huàn jī yóu

Gasoline (for cars, say) 汽油 qì yóu

Hammer 锤子chuí zi

Muffler 消音器xiāo yīn qì

Screwdriver 螺丝刀 luósīdāo, screw 螺丝　luósīdāo
