The famous Candy Candy Final Story's (CCFS) question: who is Candy's husband? To me Candy's husband is Neal Leagan.

Positive Side: He loved Candy so much, romantically (clearly written in the manga/anime).

Negative Side: He had very bad manners. Bad bad bad boy.

When I was younger, I didn't particularly pay much attention on him. In some cases, I think he's way too annoying or mean to Candy. I re-read the manga later and as a grown up person who witness own experience, kids and their friends, I start to think that people do change. Boys are naughty in general and some are meaner than others. But when they grow up things could change, especially when there's a true love at stake.

Recently after reading so many articles worldwide I started to have more ideas about Candy x Neal. I think he's a good candidate too.

My Arguments:

1. Anthony and Albert's characters are too romantic-perfect.

Anthony was very young and yet could be very mature and had an exquisite romantic manner. Not all boys can be like that. Neal's character is more to reality which is not impossible to change for the better as he matures.

2. Character transformed

Neal was (much) younger than Albert. That means as a person Neal had more time for character development. So, we could expect him to grow to be a better mature man. Actually, in manga, except to Candy, his manner to other girls appeared to be okay.

In the anime, his character did transform slowly towards the end. In episode 110, for example, he was learning from one maid how to approach Candy. She suggested to bring her flowers which he followed. Given enough time, who knows how good he could be!

3. Love!

The most important parameter of all. It's written explicitly how much Neal loved Candy.

Neal is the only man who proposed openly to Candy in the story, anime and manga combined!

For Albert, for example, it's not clear and left to the open ending and fans' own imaginations if he loved Candy in a romantic way or not. Yes, Albert cared for Candy, that one is obvious.

It's explicitly written how other girls bored him and meant nothing to him except Candy. Many times he even tried to kiss Candy, of course she was furious and hit/slapped him hard for those. But, he kept coming back to her and tried to win her heart (compared that to Albert who left Candy just because of neighbors talking about him. That makes my heart broke with disappointment).

Throughout the manga, Candy slapped/hit/kicked him many times but, he never hit her back. Even Terry hit Candy once when they had heated arguments about Anthony. Anthony hit Candy once too when he's worried about her disappearance.

4. True love conquers all.

He was hit/slapped and given harshest possible words by Candy but he kept coming back to her. He even tried to marry her. It's hard not to symphatize to him. Too bad he's such a bad boy.

A person could change drastically when they experienced a disastrous event in life. Candy's objection to get engaged to him could provide the strong turning point for him to rethink about his manners. If his love to Candy could develop him to be a mature man with a better character, I think he'd make a superb candidate.

Because his love is strong and more passionate romantically, he could even be a more suitable (and fun!) man for Candy than Albert.
